http://www.srichinmoy.tv/tv/7Sri Chinmoy adds another twist to that concept - meditation over matter. The Indian-born athlete, meditation teacher and long-time vegetarian, well-known for his remarkable feats in a number of areas, first added weight-lifting to his repertoire in 1985. Though he could initially lift no more than an 40 pound (18 kilo) dumbbell, he soon progressed to heavier items: human beings, animals, and eventually, objects such as aeroplanes, trucks and elephants. Most of these were lifted from platforms specially designed and built by one of his helpers, Queensland engineer Unmilan Howard
On February 16 this year - captured on video footage - he raised and supported two 500 pound (227 kilo) dumbbells, concurrently, from an overhead rack - a total of 1,000 pounds (454 kilos), or six times his own body weight. The weight-lifting community was astounded, of course. “This is the most weight that anyone has ever supported overhead,” said Bill Pearl. “It boggles my mind.”
By his own admission Sri Chinmoy does not consider himself to be a weightlifter, nor does he feel a particular attraction to the sport generally preferring the freedom of running.
In a life of many activities such as writing, poetry, music, art and spiritual teacher, weightlifting is a relatively small part of his life. Sri Chinmoy will only spend a small % of his time practising weightlifting. However for the past 20 years it has, at various times formed a part of Sri Chinmoy’s own spiritual discipline and on going pursuit of self transcendence.
One reason for taking up weightlifting was that Sri Chinmoy was no longer able to run, due to a knee injury. Thus weightlifting provided an opportunity for him to keep taking part in physical exercise (of which he is a firm believer) However Sri Chinmoy says the main reason for taking up weightlifting was because of the inner inspiration, a prompting from his own inner pilot.
Sri Chinmoy began weightlifting on June 26 1985 with a clean and press 40 lb lift. By November of 1985 he had succeed in lifting his own body weight of 155lbs. His progress was rapid breaking all usual conventions about slow and steady progress.
This quiet enclave of paradise would soon resound with the clanging of iron plates as Sri Chinmoy embarked on one of the greatest adventures of our time: a journey to the edge of possibility, where human strength mingled with cosmic power — and the entire force of the universe seemed to be cradled in a tiny calf muscle.

Controversy
Some controversy surrounds the movement and multiple former followers have published claims about abusive practices within the group, including vilification of ex-disciples, excessive adoration of the guru, and profiteering. The movement was labeled a cult by the French National Assembly Commission for Cult Investigation. Some other anti-cult activists defy it as well. There are also controversies surrounding his weight lifting claims.[citation needed]. No evidence exists to support these controversies.
