Frequency More Important Than Type or Amount for Cardioprotective Effect of Alcohol

Men who drink alcohol at least three to four days per week have a reduced risk of myocardial infarction (MI), suggests a large international study.

Neither type of beverage nor proportion consumed with meals substantially alters this association, says this report from researchers in the United Sates and Australia. Moreover, men in this 12-year follow-up study who increased their alcohol consumption by a moderate amount also decreased their MI risk.

It has been widely accepted that moderate drinking protects against coronary heart disease. Until now, however, the roles played by pattern of use and type of beverage have been unclear.

These investigators, under lead author Dr Kenneth J. Mukamal from the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, examined these associations in 38,077 male health professionals, all of them free of heart disease or cancer at baseline. The study took place from 1986 to 1998.

The researchers assessed each man's consumption of beer, red or white wine, and liquor individually via validated food-frequency questionnaire every four years. Cases of nonfatal myocardial infarction and fatal coronary heart disease were documented.

In the 12 years of follow-up, there were 1,418 MI cases.

Men who drank alcohol three to four or five to seven days per week versus those who drank less than once per week had decreased risks of myocardial infarction (multivariate relative risk, 0.68 [95% confidence interval, 0.55 to 0.84] and 0.63 [95% confidence interval, 0.54 to 0.74], respectively).

Risk was similar among men who drank less than 10 g of alcohol per drinking day and those who took 30 g or more.

No single type of beverage conferred additional benefit, nor did alcohol use with meals.

Over a four-year follow-up period, a 12.5-g increase in daily alcohol use was linked with a relative risk of myocardial infarction of 0.78 (95% confidence interval, 0.62 to 0.99).

That a higher frequency of alcohol use (at least three to four days per week) provides enhanced protection against coronary disease is new. It is tempered, however, by awareness of the known detrimental effects of alcohol use.

Other contributors to this study were from the University of Sydney, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, as well as Harvard School of Public Health; Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School; and Massachusetts General Hospital, all three in Boston.

Effect of red wine and red grape extract on blood lipids, haemostatic factors, and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

OBJECTIVE:: Some epidemiological studies found a lower risk of cardiovascular disease among wine drinkers than among drinkers of other types of ethanol. This difference might be due to an effect of nonalcohol compounds in wine on important cardiovascular risk factors. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of red wine, nonalcohol compounds of red wine and placebo on established cardiovascular risk factors. DESIGN:: A parallel, four-armed intervention study. SUBJECTS:: A total of 69 healthy 38-74-y-old men and women. INTERVENTIONS:: Subjects were randomised to either 1: red wine (males: 300 ml/day, 38.3 g alcohol/day, female subjects: 200 ml/day, 25.5 g alcohol/day), 2: water+red grape extract tablets (wine-equivalent dose), 3: water+red grape extract tablets (half dose), or 4: water+placebo tablets for a period of 4 weeks. No other sources of alcohol or anthocyanin were allowed. Plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL-C/LDL-C-ratio, very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, fibrinogen, factor VII coagulant activity (FVIIc), blood pressure, and body weight were determined before and after intervention. RESULTS:: Wine consumption was associated with a significant 11-16% increase in fasting HDL-C and 8-15% decrease in fasting fibrinogen relative to not drinking wine. There were no significant treatment effects on fasting LDL-C, HDL-C/LDL-C-ratio, VLDL-triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, FVIIc, or blood pressure. Drinking wine was associated with relative body weight increments closely corresponding to the energy contributed by the alcohol component. CONCLUSION:: Moderate red wine consumption for 4 weeks is associated with desirable changes in HDL-C and fibrinogen compared with drinking water with or without red grape extract. The impact of wine on the measured cardiovascular risk factors thus seems primarily explained by an alcohol effect. Our finding suggests that the putative difference in cardiac risk associated with wine vs other alcoholic beverages might be rather explained by other life-style confounders than by red wine contents of nonalcohol components. Alcohol consumption and risk of prostate cancer in middle-aged men.

Alcohol consumption is a modifiable lifestyle factor that may affect prostate cancer risk. Alcohol alters the hormonal milieu and contains chemical substances such as flavonoids (red wine), which may alter tumor cell growth. Data from a population-based case-control study in King County, WA, were utilized to evaluate the association of alcohol consumption with prostate cancer in middle-aged men. A total of 753 newly diagnosed prostate cancer cases, 40-64 years of age, participated in the study. Seven hundred three control subjects, frequency matched to cases by age, were selected through random digit dialing. All participants completed an in-person interview on lifetime alcohol consumption and other risk factors for prostate cancer. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and assess significance (95% confidence intervals [CI]). All tests of statistical significance were two-sided. No clear association with prostate cancer risk was seen for overall alcohol consumption. Each additional glass of red wine consumed per week showed a statistically significant 6% decrease in relative risk (OR = 0.94; 95% CI = 0.90-0.98), and there was evidence for a decline in risk estimates across increasing categories of red wine intake (trend p = 0.02). No clear associations were seen for consumption of beer or liquor. Our present study suggests that consumption of beer or liquor is not associated with prostate cancer. There may be, however, a reduced relative risk associated with increasing level of red wine consumption. Further research is needed to evaluate the potential negative association between red wine intake and prostate cancer risk.

Selv drikker jeg alkohol stort sett hver dag. Som regel et glass rødvin, iblandt en øl, og en sjelden gang en liter vodka.

Mot sin hensikt? Et glass vin har neppe en betydelig dehydrende effekt. Og du burde fått ubetinget fengsel for å hevde at vann er "bedre".

Latterlig hva folk gjør for å finne en unnskyldning til å gjøre ting de innerst inne ønsker. Jada, alkohol er sikkert kjempe bra for hjertet ditt. Hvis du ønsker å ha et sunt og godt hjerte, drikk masse alkohol, hele tida. Derfor alkoholikere aldri dør av hjerteinnfarkt.  "Jada, mastrubasjon gjør at du får mere hår på hodet". Jeg velger personlig heller å tro på 184751985198 artikklene som fremviser alkohol og skadene den utfører, velger også å heller tro på ting jeg har sett alkoholen utføre med egne øyer.

Men jeg burde vel fått ubetinget fengsel får å mene at vann er bedre enn alkohol jeg og. :Smiley
