Dear Sirs,
I write to you regarding the long term effects of doping, more specifically anabolic steroids and human growth hormone.
Regarding human growth hormone it seems obvious to me that it has a life time effect because it induces growth in the bone structure. If it is, like in my opinion, correct that HGH has a permanent effect on the human body and might give permanent advantage in sports, how come you don't have life-time ban for athletes testing positive on the drug?
Regarding anabolic steroids, what is your stance on them? Do you have any opinions or research on their long term possible advantages?
Here are some links that indicates long term possible advantages e.g. possible advantages many years after usage (maybe lifetime!?):

A review spanning more than three decades of experimental studies in men found that body weight may increase by 2–5 kg as a result of short term (<10 weeks) AAS use, which may be attributed mainly to an increase of lean mass. Animal studies also found that fat mass was reduced, but most studies in humans failed to elucidate significant fat mass decrements. The effects on lean body mass have been shown to be dose dependent. Both muscle hypertrophy and the formation of new muscle fibers have been observed. The hydration of lean mass remains unaffected by AAS use, although small increments of blood volume cannot be ruled out.[25]
The following link points to a research made by scientists at a swedish university in Umeå. The conclusion is that anabolic steroids has long term effects that may give advantages to athletes well after the two years ban they may suffer:

http://www.springerlink.com/content/n5717w7u3x0754t3/So what is your stance on this question? Do you believe anabolic steroids has long term effects, even surpassing more than the 2 year ban an athlete might get for failing a drugtest? If so, why don't you raise the timespan of the ban? Why not even ban athletes for life?
This question is very relevant for the moment because there is a great debate going on in Norway. In 2007 The Norwegian Powerlifting Federation decided to make a rule that made previously banned athletes unable to compete on the national team. This rule was made illegal by their mother organization, namely NIF (Norges Idrettsforbund) - translated Norwegian Sports Federation. The Norwegian Powerlifting Federation found a way to make the rule anyways because they made it a criteria, rather than a rule, for the head coach to follow when choosing athletes for the national team.
Your organizations opinions on the matter of long term effects of anabolic steroids and why/why not you should have a life-time ban for athletes failing or that has been proved a user of anabolic steroids are highly appreciated.
Sincerely Yours,
Einar B. Gilberg
Svaret jeg fikk var følgende:
Dear Mr Gilberg,
Thank you for your email.
Please note that since athletes who dope often take the substances in higher doses than the intended use, in combination with other medications and sometimes from an “illegal source”, the exact long term health consequences of using doping substances may not be fully known.
For information on anabolic steroids and human growth hormone, we invite you to consult the attached document titled Health Consequences of Doping, which is part of the Program Officer’s Tool Kit, available on our Web site at
